Chapter 2

Chapter 2 – I Get Off the Mountain And… It’s Forest

In the center of the world’s largest continent is a mountain, which nobody ever sets foot on, neither do people even dare to approach it. At certain altitudes the climate will rapidly change and it is impossible for humans to climb. Not even small footprints can remain in this place where natural disasters are a daily occurrence. Also, this mountain is a place where the creatures called “monsters” live.

There is a ranking system in the human society to differentiate monsters. From the highest to the lowest rank are, S, A, B, C, D, E, F. And here in this place you can easily find S-ranked monsters. Simply speaking of an S-rank monster’s strength, it’s to the degree to where the Elite Knights from the major Kingdoms would be annihilated when facing against it, or somehow they would be able to repel it in exchange for great casualties. In fact, they are on a level where humans can’t do anything about it, just like natural disasters.

However, the maximum of S-rank was only something that people arbitrarily decided. To tell the truth, in this mountain also exist monsters that exceed even that of S-rank. This is exactly why this mountain has become something of a taboo for people.

And right now, a man was descending from this mountain.

The forest was made up of high trees. The trees were so tall that sunlight couldn’t reach the ground and made it difficult to see what lies far ahead. While thinking about how wide the forest was, I was walking and hanging around while eating nuts and fruits that I found.

“Delish!” – Wazu

Well, speaking of these nuts and fruits, they are actually poisonous. I can distinguish between them to some extent.

Probably, due to the fact that I couldn’t eat anything decent these past two years, I got some strange resistances as a result…

Certainly, when I was living in the mountain, I mainly ate monster meat.

I put anything in my mouth in order to survive. Although I did survive, it was very hard in the beginning. I was throwing up, my stomach hurt, I felt numb, I had hallucinations, I got a fever, and my body temperature dropped. I was in quite an unstable condition before getting used to it.

I did well to survive. I worked very hard.

Compared to what I ate at that time, even this ordinary nut was very delicious! There are plenty, but lets eat it little by little. *Munch…munch…munch*

Although I have no problem walking in the forest alone, my heart is still pounding uncontrollably when I think about meeting people. I wonder if it’ll be alright. I wonder if I can speak properly. I wonder if there is any problem with my appearance.

Once, I made a small knife from a sharpened monster bone to cut my hair. My clothes were made from monster fur, which I washed in the river properly. There is no smell left, so there is nothing to worry about. After all, the first impression is important.

“Aa~Aa~Uuu~” – Wazu

It’s bad… I’m too excited, I can’t settle down.
Let’s see, I have to properly look at the eyes of the other party. Watch my tone as to not be rude. Hmm? How do I start a conversation again? First is the greeting, then do self-introduction, then make small talk. After that… after that… I wonder what I should talk about? I can’t talk about the events of the world because I was secluded in the Mountain for the past two years.

What should I do? I can see my self stumbling through a conversation in the future.

First of all, let’s gather information by listening to the local people. Let’s make it look like I came from the countryside. There is no problem with money since the money I had brought with me when I ran away from home remains intact. I have a few dozen silver coins…

…I’m not crying. It was a reasonable amount of money that ordinary townspeople possessed! It was my entire fortune, which I had saved from before I went out from the Imperial capital!

However, when considering my future life, I had no choice except to go home because I don’t have anyone else to rely on. At this late hour, it is…

I gained a little power when I lived in the Mountain. When it comes to that, I could register as an adventurer and live a frugal life with the money earned from low-ranked requests, something like collecting herbs maybe.
Not many, but I also want to make a friend. I won’t meet with my friend from the Imperial city every again. To be able to share a foolish tale with my new friend, such a life is…

While I was lost in thought, an arrow flew from the distance and stuck into the fruit in my hand brilliantly.

“Oops!” – Wazu

Well, I was aware of the arrow before, but I thought that there wasn’t enough time to avoid it, so I planned on catching it. I forgot that there was a fruit in my hand, so the arrow was stuck in the fruit just as it was. From the direction the arrow came flying, just a little farther away, somehow I can see the figure of a person looking in my direction. Or rather, it was impossible for an arrow to come flying by itself.

Again, my heart is pounding.
At last, after 2 years, I have an opportunity to make contact with a human…

Yo-yosh! Here I come!

Without minding the other arrows that came flying towards me, I walked towards that place. After a while, I noticed that there was more than one person over there. Oh, to suddenly meet so many people, I’m at a disadvantage here. I can’t give a response when they all talk to me all at once. Should I retreat?

“Release that child!”

“Discard your weapon and surrender quietly if you don’t want to get hurt!”

The moment I heard their voices, I threw aside my fruits and nuts and started to run in their direction.
